THE "BORLAND HOUSE"
The original house was built in the
1790's with the large Greek Revival addition constructed by General Charles Borland, Jr. around 1830.
He and his wife, Isabella Hill Borland, lived there until their death. General Borland was a prominent citizen who graduated from Union College, became a lawyer, and had an illustrious political career. He
served as a Congressman, State senator. and mayor of Montgomery. General Borland founded a law school in the building next door, now the Village Sampler. General Borland was asked by Governor Clinton to oversee the construction of the famous Erie canal which began in 1817.
